报告人简介:

Charl F. J. Faul is Professor of Materials Chemistry at the School of Chemistry, and Faculty International Director for the Faculty of Science at the University of Bristol, Bristol, UK.  He obtained his PhD from Stellenbosch, South Africa, before spending 4 years at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interface, Potsdam, Germany. He moved to Bristol in 2005, where he holds a personal chair as Professor of Materials Chemistry. Charl was Head of Inorganic and Materials Chemistry from 2018 to 2023, and very recently secured a University of Bristol Enterprise Fellowship to explore commercialization of materials from his laboratories.

He has held visiting positions in Finland (Aalto), France (Rennes), and China (Tsinghua), and has close ties to a number of leading research institutions in China. Charl is a synthetic materials chemist with a large multidisciplinary international research group focussing on the design and synthesis of electroactive functional materials and novel supramolecular polymers.  He has an H-index of 42, published more than 125 research papers (including in Nature Communications, Angewandte Chemie, JACS, Advanced Materials and other leading chemistry journals), holds 4 patents, and given more than 160 international plenary, keynote and invited lectures. Applications of his research work are actively pursued in the areas of conjugated microporous polymers (for gas capture, storage and conversion), and electroactive materials and devices (addressable structures for artificial actuators in soft robotics). He is passionate about internationalisation and mentoring the next generation of scientist.

报告内容简介:

In the quest for new materials to help to solve global challenges, we have focused our efforts in recent years on the production of functional polymeric materials.1, 2 The focus in this presentation will be on various strategies we are employing to tune both structure and function, and finally in these materials.

After introducing the specific classes of porous materials (both conjugated microporous polymers and porous polyimides) used in my research group,1, 3 rules to design these materials, and our developed Bristol-Xi'an Jiatong (BXJ) approach to tune their properties and functionality, will be introduced.4 The versatility of these materials will be shown in their application in energy storage,5 and for the removal of harmful pollutants from water.6 Our latest results, showing the successful metal-free and co-catalyst free conversion of CO2 to useful fuels and other chemical feedstocks, will be highlighted.7 These materials present an exciting platform to address the global challenges we currently face.
